Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is a nation going through a dramatic change. Until a few years ago, the country was closed off to the rest of the world for decades during military rule.

In 2013 it became possible to cross four Thailand/Myanmar overland borders for the first time in five decades. Previously the borders had been open for nothing more than visa runs with Thailand, but onward travel was not permitted.

There are still certain areas of Myanmar that are closed off to tourism. I’m excited to explore a country that is supposed to be somewhat frozen in time. There isn’t a lot of information available about traveling within Myanmar. I’ve been in contact with a few bloggers and friends, but other than that, I know nothing.

This is an adventure unlike any I’ve taken before. I’m excited to step back in time and discover Myanmar.

I’ve heard that Internet connection isn’t the best in Myanmar. I’ll do my best to stay up to date with posts, if not I’ll be sure to share stories and photos upon my return to Thailand.

As always, feel free to follow the adventure on Instagram!

For travelers: If you’re planning a trip to Myanmar and need help figuring out where you can enter the country and how to get there, I’ll be sharing everything I know about the visa process, crossing the border and how to get around the country very soon!
